Honoring a Legacy of Learning and Service

In Memory of Excellence

The Rhodell J. Fields III Memorial Scholarship honors the extraordinary life and legacy of a man who embodied the transformative power of education, service, and mentorship. Professor Fields was more than an educator; he was a mentor, advocate, and champion for those seeking to better themselves through learning.

A Life of Service and Teaching

Mr. Fields was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who dedicated his life to education and public service. As a Professor Emeritus at Saint Petersburg College in Clearwater, Florida, and Adjunct Professor at Nova Southeastern University, he taught International Relations, Economics, American Government, and Politics with a passion that changed lives.

His teaching philosophy went beyond rote memorization to true understanding. As one former student, Charlene Demers-McDonough, remembered: “You made me realize that the A’s I had previously achieved were through recollection and rote memory, not the process of learning through understanding… I learned that knowledge is something to be understood before it could be truly learned.”

Beyond the Classroom

Professor Fields’ commitment to service extended far beyond academia:

  • Advocate for the Vulnerable: State Certified Long-Term Care Ombudsman in Florida and Chairman of the Board for the Florida State Long-Term Care Ombudsman Council
  • Community Leader: Board member of Kiwanis Club of Clearwater East, Pinellas County Alcohol and Substance Abuse Council, Suncoast Tiger Bay Club, and proud Life Member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
  • Educational Leadership: Vice President St. Petersburg College Faculty Senate, founding President of The Johnnie Ruth Clark Chapter at St. Petersburg College
  • Political Engagement: Campaign Manager at the state level and consultant at federal, state, and local levels

Our Values
